National Library Card Sign-Up Month

There are few things as empowering as a library card; this small, thin card is a key that opens up a whole new world of information, entertainment, and opportunities, all for free! September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and if you haven’t already got yours, we here at the Grayslake Area Library (GAPL) encourage you to come in and register today! Click here for more information.

Library cards are for people of all ages; from newborns to great-great-grandparents, everyone is welcome! When you sign up for a library card, you are joining a diverse community of learners and explorers.

What can you do with your GAPL card? We’re so glad you asked! Of course, you can check out books, movies, and other media, but did you know that we have puzzles and board games for all ages? Have you heard about our Library of Things? This special collection hosts a wide variety of tools and kits, from Chromebooks and video game controllers to sewing machines and even telescopes!

Skip the subscriptions with your GAPL card! Our digital reading and entertainment collection is robust with thousands of free movies, documentaries, TV shows, music, books, audiobooks, comics, magazines, and cookbooks. You can stream & download on your favorite device anywhere you go with free library apps, all available with just a few clicks.

For those looking to do some research or pick up a new skill, we have a selection of research and learning resources. Learn a new craft with CreativeBug, make an informed purchase with Consumer Reports, or discover your family history with Ancestry! You can also use your card to make an appointment in The Hub, our very own makerspace, to use the laser engraver, vinyl cutter, and sewing and embroidery machines. Check out a Museum Adventure Pass to get free admission or discounts to local attractions such as the Brookfield Zoo and the Chicago Botanic Garden.

If you host a book club, you can use your Grayslake library card to order multiple copies of your next book. If you need to reserve a meeting room for your non-profit meeting or event, you can do that, too! Want to check out something we don’t have in our collection? With a GAPL card, you can access over 5 million materials from our partner libraries; we can even help you find what you are looking for from libraries all over the US.

Figuring out if GAPL or another Illinois library is your home library can be confusing.  Not to worry, you can check HERE or call us at 847/223-5313, and we will help you!  If we are not your home library, you’re still welcome here!  Stop by our front desk to register your home library card with us, and then you can access our physical materials and The Hub’s tools, technologies, and materials.

While you’re here, we encourage you to check out our newsletter or online calendar to see the kinds of classes and events we offer; from tech tutorials to educational talks, there’s something for everyone!
