Resolve to Read in 2024

Believe it or not, 2024 is just around the corner, and many people will be ringing in the new year with resolutions to improve and enrich their lives. One such resolution might be to read more; we are here to help! Your library card grants you access to thousands of books, both physical copies and digital. In addition to that, we offer the following tips and tricks to read more in the new year:

  1. Multitask with an audiobook. Listening to an audiobook (yes, it counts as reading!) while you’re driving or doing housework is a great way to make the most of your time. The library has many audiobooks on CD and Playaway, and you can also check out eaudiobooks on apps like Libby and Hoopla.

  2. Join a book club. The promise of discussing a book with like-minded readers can do wonders for encouraging you to read. If you can’t find a book club you like, you can always start your own with friends and family. The Grayslake Library has a designated book discussion collection that lets book club hosts check out multiple copies of the same book to give to other members. We also have book club services where we can order multiple copies of a book from other libraries for members to pick up at the front desk.

  3. Read the right books. Everybody’s taste is different. You might pick up a book everybody has recommended, only to discover that it isn’t your style. It’s important to ensure that the books you read speak to you, and you will breeze through the pages. Our reference staff is happy to help you pick up a new book based on your preferences. You can also fill out the Book Match form; a librarian will reply with some hand-picked titles.

  4. Start out right with the Winter Reading Challenge. And if you will be reading anyway, why not participate in the 2024 Winter Reading Challenge? It’s a great way to set your intent for the year immediately. You earn a prize just for signing up, and if you can read 20 minutes a day for 30 days between January 8 and February 29 (they need not be consecutive), you earn a ticket to enter one of eight grand prize drawings! To be notified when the Challenge goes live, sign up here.
